Goodbye 2020

2020 is finally at an end, but unfortunately, all the garbage it’s thrown at us hasn’t quite disappeared as of yet. Where I live, for instance, has just plunged into another lockdown (well, kind of), and my workplace has been closed, effective as of 1 minute past midnight this morning.

Still, while I don’t mean to diminish the problems people have faced this year, there is at least one facet of 2020 that I can be thankful for – namely the fact that this year has been my blogs most successful!

(depending on how you define ‘success’, of course).

Going purely off the WordPress stats, the number of visitors who have come to are greater this year than ever before, as you can see in the chart below (visitors are the darker shades):

Overall, while the numbers themselves may not be all that impressive to big time writers and top tier bloggers, for me, it’s still an achievement, and inspiration to keep on going with it.

A bit of context: the first few years, this site was more of a casual blog. An outlet for my thoughts, some film and comic related, others not.

When I began working on my other blog New to Comics for my MA final project, this site took a bit of a hit. And both sites then took a subsequent hit when I graduated and had less time and money to consume the media I wanted to write about.

After moving in with my girlfriend, I decided to rejig things a little. While 2018 is the year with the lowest amount of views/visitors, it served as something of a rebirth for the site, as I condensed both blogs into one, and refocused on films and comics.

Last year, the figures rose as we were blessed with some truly momentous cinematic events like Avengers: Endgame, Joker and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker which obviously led to hits from people interested in those film’s respective reviews, among other things. It still amazes me how we’re living in a time when we’ve witnessed both the return of Star Wars (both the prequels and the sequels) and the epic journey of the Infinity Saga. There’ll be more Marvel and Star Wars films, obviously. But no one will ever experience that again in the same way we have.

Unfortunately, the statistics for that year are off slightly, due to some glitch causing a single person to wrack up a few thousand views (thus making ‘views’ a less reliable indicator than ‘visitors’). WordPress said there was nothing they could do about it.

This year, things obviously haven’t been so peachy, but I would assume due to the fact that I and many others have had too much time on their hands, people have shown up here in greater numbers than ever before.

So thank you, readers, for that!

A couple of things that stood out to me:

  • Not including this one, I’ve written 100 posts this year. Unintentional, but a nice round number. Or it would be, if not for this 101st post.
  • I show up quite a lot on the Chinese search engine Baidu, apparently. Why? I don’t know. But Chinese readers are now my third most prominent after British and American.
  • Similarly, some posts in recent months, such as my Injustice reviews, have led to an increase in Russian readers. They take the number four spot.
  • After reviewing some of the search terms that led people here, someone clicked through after searching ‘evil dead porn’ and (even better) ‘evil deda porn cocok’. Although that was actually several years ago. But I’ve only just noticed it now.

That last one isn’t relevant to 2020, of course, but I found that to be amusing and weird in equal measure, so I thought I’d give it a mention. Whoever you are, I’m sorry this site almost certainly didn’t have the content you were searching for. I hope you stuck around all the same.

As for me, going forward, I’m going to keep up with my comic reviews, which will admittedly skew more Marvel focused until I can find a more budget-friendly way to consume more DC comics.

I’ll also come back round to some indies, but to be honest with you, they don’t seem to have the same appeal as Marvel and DC stories do. Blame the stats, not me.

At some point, I want to change the name of the blog. I think the expiration date of the current name is around April, and thus far I’ve got nothing, so suggestions are welcome. I’m also open to suggestions on what to write about as well, and I’ll throw in some more drawings if people are interested.

I’m hoping if I stick with it, 2021 will be an even better year for the blog than this one. I’m also hoping that 2021 wont shit the bed like 2020, but that is entirely outside of my control.

Anyway, happy new year everyone! Let’s hope it’s better than the last!
